Ways you can help

Adult Learning Lab

Our Adult Learning Lab in southwest Detroit helps adults improve their literacy, math and computer skills so they can earn their GED and be better qualified for employment. The Lab needs tutors to help students with math, English and other subject areas.

Piquette Square for Veterans

Piquette Square provides housing and support services to 150 formerly homeless veterans to help them rebuild their lives and reintegrate into the community. Piquette Square is regarded as national model in the campaign to end veteran homelessness. There are numerous volunteer opportunities at Piquette Square, including helping with fundraising, preparing Welcome Kits for new tenants, working on the community gardens and landscaping, hosting events and meals, tutoring and offering classes, and more. For more information, contact Bindi Shah via email.

Neighborhood Beautification

Southwest Solutions, in partnership with other organizations, is the lead agency in many initiatives to beautify and stabilize neighborhoods, particularly in southwest Detroit. Southwest Solutions organizes an annual Neighborhood Beautification Day in June which draws hundreds of volunteers.

One-time opportunities

  • Neighborhood Beautification Day: Every year, on the first or second Saturday in June, hundreds of volunteers work in teams to beautify sites in southwest Detroit. Volunteers create community gardens, spruce up lots and parks, and more.
  • Select a day to volunteer in the spring or summer to work in a team to improve a site by painting, gardening, cleaning, and removing weeds and overgrowth. Veterans and Southwest Solutions’ staff are often part of the team.

RESULTS

Over 200 volunteers participated in Neighborhood Beautification Day 2018 activities

The volunteers worked in teams at 12 sites – installing flower beds and community gardens, weeding and mulching, and clearing overgrown brush and debris

Piquette Square for Veterans is a welcoming environment drawing hundreds of volunteers a year to help the 150 formerly homeless veterans who reside there
Volunteers tutoring at the Learning Lab help adults improve their literacy, math and computer skills so they can earn their GED and be better qualified for employment. The students have diverse backgrounds. Many come from Latin America and Africa. Several reside at Freedom House Detroit, which assists individuals seeking asylum after fleeing persecution in their native countries.
