Adult Learning Lab
Our Adult Learning Lab in southwest Detroit helps adults improve their literacy, math and computer skills so they can earn their GED and be better qualified for employment. The Lab needs tutors to help students with math, English and other subject areas.

Piquette Square for Veterans
Piquette Square provides housing and support services to 150 formerly homeless veterans to help them rebuild their lives and reintegrate into the community. Piquette Square is regarded as national model in the campaign to end veteran homelessness. There are numerous volunteer opportunities at Piquette Square, including helping with fundraising, preparing Welcome Kits for new tenants, working on the community gardens and landscaping, hosting events and meals, tutoring and offering classes, and more. Neighborhood Beautification
Southwest Solutions, in partnership with other organizations, is the lead agency in many initiatives to beautify and stabilize neighborhoods, particularly in southwest Detroit. Southwest Solutions organizes an annual Neighborhood Beautification Day in June. Hundreds of volunteers work in teams to beautify sites in southwest Detroit. Volunteers create community gardens, spruce up lots and parks, and more. Select a day to volunteer in the spring or summer to work in a team to improve a site by painting, gardening, cleaning, and removing weeds and overgrowth.

Over 200 volunteers participated in Neighborhood Beautification Day 2018 activities
The volunteers worked in teams at 12 sites – installing flower beds and community gardens, weeding and mulching, and clearing overgrown brush and debris

Volunteers tutoring at the Learning Lab help adults improve their literacy, math and computer skills so they can earn their GED and be better qualified for employment. The students have diverse backgrounds. Many come from Latin America and Africa. Several reside at Freedom House Detroit, which assists individuals seeking asylum after fleeing persecution in their native countries.
