Ways you can help

Adult Learning Lab

Our Adult Learning Lab in southwest Detroit helps adults improve their literacy, math and computer skills so they can earn their GED and be better qualified for employment. The Lab needs tutors to help students with math, English and other subject areas.

Piquette Square for Veterans

Piquette Square provides housing and support services to 150 formerly homeless veterans to help them rebuild their lives and reintegrate into the community. Piquette Square is regarded as national model in the campaign to end veteran homelessness. There are numerous volunteer opportunities at Piquette Square, including helping with fundraising, preparing Welcome Kits for new tenants, working on the community gardens and landscaping, hosting events and meals, tutoring and offering classes, and more. For more information, contact Chery Allen, Veteran Resource Coordinator, at 313.297.1377 or email.

Thrive by Five

Our Thrive by Five program provides Early Start and Head Start to families in southwest Detroit. Volunteers are needed to help with reading, tutoring, creative projects and more.  Every volunteer hour counts as an “in-kind” donation and helps us meet funding requirements set by the federal government. We are looking for volunteers who would like to help with a single project or make an on-going commitment. To learn more, contact Beverly Hogan at 313.896.2800 x.6552 or email.

Neighborhood Beautification

Southwest Solutions, in partnership with other organizations, is the lead agency in many initiatives to beautify and stabilize neighborhoods, particularly in southwest Detroit. Southwest Solutions organizes an annual Neighborhood Beautification Day in June, sponsored by NeighborWorks America, which draws hundreds of volunteers. To register for Neighborhood Beautification Day 2017 on June 10, please use this form. This year’s event is sponsored by JPMorgan Chase, Masco, BHPI, Citizens Bank, Marathon, Sherwin-Williams and NeighborWorks.

Go-Getters Drop-in Center

Go-Getters in southwest Detroit provides a place of fellowship for men and women living with mental illness, many of whom are homeless or formerly homeless. It provides nutritious lunches, art and recreational activities, learning opportunities, recovery support groups, and important support services to help individuals in their recovery journeys and reintegration into society. Volunteers at Go-Getters help with providing and serving meals, replenishing the food pantry, computer instruction, talent shows, arts programs, social events, holiday celebrations, gardening and beautification, the annual Go-Getters’ auction, and more.

One-time opportunities

  • Neighborhood Beautification Day: Every year, on the first or second Saturday in June, hundreds of volunteers work in teams to beautify sites in southwest Detroit. Volunteers create community gardens, spruce up lots and parks, and more. Sign-up for this year’s event on June 10th here.
  • Clean Up Detroit: Select a day to volunteer in the spring or summer to work in a team to improve a site by painting, gardening, cleaning, and removing weeds and overgrowth. Veterans and Southwest Solutions’ staff are often part of the team.
  • Patriot Day: For this annual event on September 11 at Piquette Square for Veterans, volunteers are needed to help set up, greet and register guests, and serve refreshments.
  • Turkey Day Distribution: Help distribute turkeys and fixings to families enrolled in our Early Head Start and Head Start programs. This annual volunteer opportunity typically happens on the Monday before Thanksgiving.

RESULTS

400 volunteers participated in Neighborhood Beautification Day 2015 activities

The volunteers worked in teams at 15 sites – installing flower beds and community gardens, weeding and mulching, and clearing overgrown brush and debris

Piquette Square for Veterans is a welcoming environment drawing hundreds of volunteers a year to help the 150 formerly homeless veterans who reside there
