Our Adult Learning Lab in southwest Detroit helps adults improve their literacy, math and computer skills so they can earn their GED and be better qualified for employment. The Lab needs tutors to help students with math, English and other subject areas.
Piquette Square provides housing and support services to 150 formerly homeless veterans to help them rebuild their lives and reintegrate into the community. Piquette Square is regarded as national model in the campaign to end veteran homelessness. There are numerous volunteer opportunities at Piquette Square, including helping with fundraising, preparing Welcome Kits for new tenants, working on the community gardens and landscaping, hosting events and meals, tutoring and offering classes, and more. Our Thrive by Five program provides Early Start and Head Start to families in southwest Detroit. Volunteers are needed to help with reading, tutoring, creative projects and more. Every volunteer hour counts as an “in-kind” donation and helps us meet funding requirements set by the federal government. Southwest Solutions, in partnership with other organizations, is the lead agency in many initiatives to beautify and stabilize neighborhoods, particularly in southwest Detroit. Southwest Solutions organizes an annual Neighborhood Beautification Day in June, sponsored by NeighborWorks America, which draws hundreds of volunteers. Go-Getters in southwest Detroit provides a place of fellowship for men and women living with mental illness, many of whom are homeless or formerly homeless. It provides nutritious lunches, art and recreational activities, learning opportunities, recovery support groups, and important support services to help individuals in their recovery journeys and reintegration into society. Volunteers at Go-Getters help with providing and serving meals, replenishing the food pantry, computer instruction, talent shows, arts programs, social events, holiday celebrations, gardening and beautification, the annual Go-Getters’ auction, and more.
