YouthWorks-Detroit helps spiff up the neighborhood

July 8th, 2010
Malik Cegers, 17, will attend the University of Detroit Mercy in the fall to study biochemistry. "This summer job is a chance for me to give back to the city that gave me an opportunity to strive in circumstances often not the best," Malik says.

The sweltering heat this week did not wilt the spirits of the young people with YouthWorks-Detroit who cleaned up around properties owned by Southwest Solutions. The YouthWorks employees and staff cleared lots of trash and weeds, cut overgrown grass and vines, tended to gardens, trimmed trees, and spruced up the properties. The young people are paid for their work, but all of them emphasize that their primary motivation is to better the community and act on their spiritual convictions of compassion and fellowship. YouthWorks is a Christian-based organization that brings together youth from many different cultures.
