During this time of the COVID-19 crisis, our partnership with Gleaners Community Food Bank to provide healthy, low-cost food to the formerly homeless veterans at our Piquette Square is more important than ever.

The Gleaners program is called My Neighborhood Mobile Grocery (MNMG). It gives low-income shoppers the opportunity to purchase nutritious food staples and fresh produce at low prices so they can stretch their monthly budget and eat healthier. The veterans at Piquette Square choose the food items they want from an order form, pay for them, and the items are taken off the MNMG truck and brought inside for them.

Since the “Stay Home, Stay Safe” Executive Order went into effect, about 40 (of the 150) veterans at Piquette Square have been using the weekly MNMG service. The veterans observe physical distancing protocols to collect their orders, and they are encouraged to wear the protective masks that Southwest Solutions had provided them. The MNMG service at Piquette Square started about four years ago. The COVID crisis has increased its use, and the veterans say that they are thankful for the convenience, safety, affordability and quality of the service.
