Toyota CEO visits our family learning program

October 19th, 2016
Sharon Darling and Jim Lentz (both standing at the board) participate in an ELLP anti-bullying lesson at Harms Elementary. The class is being taught by Christina Mireles, who oversees our ELLP.

Our Early Language Learners Program (ELLP) at Harms Elementary hosted two prominent guests: Jim Lentz, CEO of Toyota USA North America; and Sharon Darling, president and founder of National Center for Families Learning (NCFL). Toyota and NCFL are important funding partners for our ELLP, which is recognized as one of the best programs of its kind in the nation.

Southwest Solutions’ ELLP focuses on Spanish-speaking families with children in pre-kindergarten through third grade. ELLP teaches parents English. It also lets parents spend time in their children’s classrooms so they can learn with their children and learn to support their children’s learning. Our ELLP has served more than 1,000 families in southwest Detroit in the last ten years. This school year we are operating ELLP at two schools: Harms and Avancemos.

A recent independent study showed that our ELLP students significantly increased their reading proficiency, academic confidence, social skills, attendance and other outcomes. Parents significantly increased their English skills, their engagement in their children’s homework and reading, and their participation at their children’s school.
