Our Supportive Housing holiday celebration this year benefited from the generosity of Ford Motor Company and its employees. The celebration is an annual event that brings together consumers and staff from our programs that assist homeless and formerly homeless individuals and families with their housing and support services needs.
This year, the event was planned to coincide with a Ford Accelerated Action Day on Friday, December 6. Through the Ford Volunteer Corps, Ford employees participated in activities with nonprofit organizations that help feed the hungry. Southwest Solutions was one of 15 nonprofits in the metro Detroit area that benefited from the Ford volunteer effort. Ford also contributed $5000 toward our supportive housing holiday event. The funds were used to provide a hot, full-course lunch to more than 200 consumers, rent a banquet hall, provide gift bags of household and other useful items, and purchase holiday decorations and bookcases for our Go-Getters Drop-in Center.
About two dozen Ford volunteers assisted at Go-Getters and then served lunch at the banquet. At Go-Getters, the volunteers prepared food in the kitchen, assembled bookcases, decorated Christmas trees, and put together the 150 gift bags. The lunch banquet was held at the Gaelic League of Detroit. It was a festive atmosphere, featuring a DJ, dancing and a raffle.
In addition to Ford Motor Company, we thank the St. Elizabeth of Hungary Fraternity Secular Franciscan Order, which provided more than 25 gifts for the raffle, as well as the centerpieces and help with set up. We also thank DJ Joey A for the music.
