More than 30 men read books to kids in classrooms at Mason Academy today. The third annual “Real Men Read” event was organized by Sonya Vinson, our Community Schools Coordinator at Mason, which is located in northeast Detroit. The men who read represented many different professions, including the military, police, firefighters, doctors, business, government, nonprofit organizations, and artists. “It’s paramount for men to take responsibility for instilling a love of reading and learning in children and to serve as mentors to help children succeed,” said Stephen Doyle, Public Relations Officer with the Navy Recruiting District Michigan. Five of Stephen’s colleagues in the Navy were among the readers.
“My deepest thanks to all the men who volunteered their time to participate in this event,” said Sonya. “Real Men Read gives students who may not have positive male role models in their life a chance to reach out to men who truly want to make a difference in their community.”
