Every two weeks, every one of the 459 students at Harms Elementary in southwest Detroit takes home a bag of food items so that their families can prepare meals on weekends, when children might otherwise go hungry. The program is arranged by the nonprofit Weekend Survival Kits.
“My parents don’t have a lot of money, and so the bags of food really help us,” said Gabriela Guzman, a 5th-grader at Harms who also volunteers to help distribute the bags to other students. Every student at Harms receives free breakfast and lunch at the school on schooldays.
The program at Harms is sponsored by Delta Dental of Michigan and is facilitated by our Community School Site Coordinator at Harms, Ana Martinez.
“On behalf of all the families and staff at Harms, I want to thank Delta Dental for financing the program, Weekend Survival Kit for coordinating the packaging and delivering of the bags, and Gleaners Community Food Bank for providing the food items.” Ana said. “I would also like to thank our parent and community volunteers who are always available to unload the bags into our parent room where our students are able to pick them up.”
