Neighborhood Beautification Day 2010 draws more than 350 volunteers!

June 5th, 2010
Along a knoll across from the Go-Getters Drop-in Center, volunteers landscaped, cleaned, cleared overgrown shrubs, and installed a perennial garden.

The 4th Annual Neighborhood Beautification Day drew more than 350 volunteers who worked at 15 different sites in southwest Detroit on Saturday morning, June 5th. Volunteers planted gardens and trees, landscaped, spruced up sites, cleared overgrown shrubs, removed or painted over graffiti, painted a colorful mural, and helped in many other ways to beautify the neighborhood. The volunteers came from all over metro Detroit and teamed with Southwest Housing Solutions’ tenants, partners, donors and staff.

Teams worked diligently but also enjoyed the camaraderie and the sense that the projects made a difference in creating a greener and cleaner neighborhood.

Neighborhood Beautification Day was sponsored by State Farm, Flagstar Bank, Sherwin Williams, LISC Detroit, and NeighborWorks. The Greening of Detroit and Southwest Detroit Business Association (SDBA) lent tools for the event.

Neighborhood Beautification Day is part of National NeighborWorks Week, which is an annual mobilization of volunteers and neighbors to promote neighborhood change. Southwest Housing Solutions has been a NeighborWorks affiliate since 2006.
