Through a special arrangement with the City of Detroit, 16 schools in the Detroit Public Schools Community District (DPSCD) are serving as summer recreation centers for kids and families to enjoy. Of these 16 schools, Southwest Solutions’ Community Schools (CS) site coordinators are helping to supervise the recreation program at 11 of them. Kelly Cousins is supervising the recreation program at Gardner Elementary on the west side.

During the school year, Kelly is the CS site coordinator at Ann Arbor Trail School in Detroit, but like most of our CS site coordinators, she is at another school this summer to help make sure that the pilot recreation program goes well. “We have about 45 kids a day coming to the Gardner site,” Kelly said. “The program is fulfilling a big need in the community and the kids are enjoying the activities.”

Our CS site coordinators are supervising the program at these 11 schools: Brenda Scott – Carstens – Cody High – Cooke – Gardner – Gompers – Henry Ford High – Hutchinson – Pasteur – Paul Robeson – Western High The other five DPSCD schools participating in the program are: Carver STEM, East English Village, John R. King, Mackenzie, and Sampson-Webber. The free program is open weekdays from 8AM to 6PM. It ends on August 11.
