Higher Hopes provided free turkeys (and all the fixings) to more than 200 low-income families in southwest Detroit served by our Early Head Start and Head Start programs. The families came to our offices at McGraw, where more than 40 volunteers loaded the food into their vehicles. Higher Hopes is a nonprofit organization founded by Bill Birndorf. It distributed about 1000 Thanksgiving meals to families in four locations in Detroit on Monday, including our McGraw site. Higher Hopes raised the money for this charitable effort through online and corporate donations. Each family received enough food to prepare a holiday meal for 8 to 12 people. The volunteers at McGraw came from the Walled Lake Northern varsity baseball team, Vets for Christ Organization, Piquette Square for Veterans, and staff with our Early Childhood and School Based Services.
