Bennett Elementary hosted its 4th Annual Health Fair this month for students, their families, and the community. Students learned about the health benefits of good nutrition, exercise, and more. Ten community organizations participated in the event, which was co-organized by our Community Schools Coordinator at Bennett.
Walgreens provided free flu shots to students and their parents. Other organizations at the health fair included our Children, Youth and Families program, Family Alliance for Change, Leaders Advancing and Helping Communities, the Detroit Kidney Foundation, CHASS Community Services, and Smiles Mobile Dentistry. Bennett works with many of these local organizations throughout the year to offer parent workshops and health screenings.
“As a Community School, Bennett hopes to continue programs like the health fair and partnerships with local clinics and educational programs to educate families on the importance of personal and family health,” said Becky Dean, Community School Coordinator at Bennett. “With winter approaching, we know that many students get sick and miss school. Providing health resources and information to families is critical to improving students’ health, preventing disease, and improving attendance at school.”
