Congratulations to the seven Detroiters who recently graduated from our Earn + Learn program that trains Detroiters for careers in the HVAC or Electrical skilled trades! The graduates persevered to complete the program despite the interruption due to Covid crisis.
The program is 12 weeks. It consists of four weeks of work-readiness and WorkKeys and then eight weeks of pre-apprenticeship training to earn either a 608 Universal (HVAC) certification or an NEC Residential (Electrical) certification. The program is free and participants also receive a stipend.
“When I got information about this program, I realized that I couldn’t let the opportunity pass me by to learn a valuable trade for free,” said Tony Pang, 50, who completed the Electrical training. “It’s a trade that will always be in demand, allowing me to help myself and help others. The program was excellent. It doesn’t just teach you a trade. It prepares you to re-enter the workforce. You learn about resumes, communication skills, and every aspect of work-readiness. My goal going forward is to start my own residential electrical company in Detroit that’s affordable. It will be my way of continuing to give back.”
This cohort began last December at the Randolph Technical Center, but then was suspended after the Stay at Home order in March. The program resumed in mid-August. The work-readiness component was then taught virtually. The hands-on training occurred at the Detroit Training Institute of Technology, with all necessary Covid-related precautions observed.
The cohort initially had 18 participants. Seven elected to resume the program when it restarted. The others will still have the opportunity to complete their training in subsequent cohorts. We expect the next cohort to start in late fall. To learn more, including how to enroll, contact Jordan at 313-297-0095 or firstname.lastname@example.org.
