After receiving food and school supplies for her family of four children, as well as for her sister’s family with three children, Sylvia Adams pulled her car to the side and wept.
“I am just so grateful for the help for our family and for all the other families who came today,” said Sylvia. “My hours at work have been cut because of the Covid crisis. I’m not used to asking for help, but we really need it at this time”
Sylvia among those who came to our special free food and school supplies event on August 25 at New Paradigm College Prep in southwest Detroit. Families received over 30 pounds of food provided by Gleaners Community Food Bank including shelf-stable items, fresh produce, milk, protein, and more. The families also collected school supplies in backpacks, provided by Detroit Wayne Integrated Health Network (DWIHN). The food distribution served 450 families, and 700 backpacks were given away.
All necessary precautions were observed to distribute the food and school supplies safely. Drivers stayed in their vehicles while the food and school supplies were placed in the trunks.
In addition to Gleaners and DWIHN, we thank all our other partners who made this event possible: the Parent Support Partners at Family Alliance for Change; Youth United; the Detroit Health Department; Universal Products; Congress of Communities; Hope Starts Here Detroit; and House of Worship/Casa de Adoración.
Through our partnership with Gleaners, this was our sixth free food distribution event at New Paradigm since the pandemic began. The partnership has also held 11 free food distribution events at our St. Anthony’s building in Mexicantown. The food distributions serve about 400 families each and will continue into the fall, at least.
