Four new Early Learning Centers open in Detroit

On Saturday, about a dozen volunteers connected with the “Mojo In The Morning” radio show painted classrooms at Barton Elementary in Detroit. Barton is one of four new Early Learning Communities (ELCs) in the city operated by the Family Literacy program at Southwest Solutions and funded by the United Way. Each held an open house on Monday or Tuesday this week. More than 70 families came.

ELCs provide free training and resources to parents and caregivers so that they can prepare children to be “ready to learn” when the children enter school.

The new ELCs are at Dixon Elementary School, St. Cecilia’s Catholic School, Clara Barton Elementary School, and Gesu Catholic School.

These add to two others that Southwest Solutions operates: the McGraw ELC and Southwestern ELC.

The six sites combined will serve more than 750 parents and caregivers and help more than 3000 children be better prepared to be successful in school.
