For children and parents alike, it was an emotional first day of Head Start classes this Monday at the former Beard Elementary school in southwest Detroit.
Though many of the children had a hard time letting go of their parents, and parents felt torn about leaving their tearful kids, the Head Start staff helped both children and parents adjust and feel at ease in short order. Within an hour of their parents’ departure, the children were engaged in fun learning activities and interacting freely with the staff and other children.
Before heading to work, Mandy Kenney read a book to her four-year-old son Shawn before leaving him in the capable and caring hands of our Head Start staff. “I feel this is the best place for my son to develop his social skills and learn so he won’t be behind and he’ll be ready for kindergarten,” Mandy said.
There are still more than 100 Head Start slots available at Beard, and families who may be eligible are encouraged to apply. Full day and half day options are available. Beard is located at 840 Waterman, Detroit 48209. The building was once a DPS elementary school. To learn more about Head Start at Beard, call 313-849-5016 or email email@example.com.
