ESL students complete forklift training

June 13th, 2019
ESL students and instructors at our Adult Learning Lab gather with Southwest Solutions' President and CEO Joe Tasse at the graduation event recognizing the students who completed the forklift training program.

Through a partnership with the Detroit Training Center (DTC), a dozen students in our English as a Second Language (ESL) class became certified to operate a forklift. The students celebrated their accomplishment at our Adult Learning Lab last night.

The job training program involved three components: English and civics education; workforce readiness instruction, including learning reading, writing, math, and speaking skills needed for the job environment; and workforce training at DTC.

Many of the program graduates indicated that they would like to get jobs as forklift operators. The jobs start at $14 an hour.

This training program is funded through a grant from the Integrated English Literacy and Civics Education (IEL/CE) under the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA).

Congratulations graduates!
