Through a partnership with the Detroit Training Center (DTC), a dozen students in our English as a Second Language (ESL) class became certified to operate a forklift. The students celebrated their accomplishment at our Adult Learning Lab last night.
The job training program involved three components: English and civics education; workforce readiness instruction, including learning reading, writing, math, and speaking skills needed for the job environment; and workforce training at DTC.
Many of the program graduates indicated that they would like to get jobs as forklift operators. The jobs start at $14 an hour.
This training program is funded through a grant from the Integrated English Literacy and Civics Education (IEL/CE) under the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA).
