Rob Murphy, the head coach of the Eastern Michigan University basketball team, was once a student and a teacher at Bagley Elementary School in Detroit. Coach Murphy brought his players, coaching staff and volunteers to Bagley to provide boxes of food to families and hand out toys to every one of the 375 students at the school. The players and coaches also played games with the kids, read to them, and encouraged them to do well in school. The “Gift of Sharing” event, now in its third consecutive year, is sponsored by the Rob Murphy Foundation.
Our Community Schools Site Coordinator at Bagley, Ardelle Bradley, helped organize the event along with Lakeesha Kimbro (the school’s Success Coach as part of the State’s Pathways Out of Poverty program), Principal Christa Reeves, school staff, and Nikki Borges (Chair of the Board for the Rob Murphy Foundation).
“Every year, the Gift of Sharing gets bigger and better, and the families at Bagley Elementary are so appreciative of Rob, Nikki and the Foundation,” said Ardelle. “”It’s what the holiday spirit is all about.”
