Vehicles for Change will offer low-income Detroiters reliable used cars at low-cost

Vehicles for Change has launched a car donation and car award program in Detroit

Vehicles for Change is opening an office in Detroit to provide low-income Detroit families the opportunity to own quality used vehicles for $750 to $850 so they can improve their prospects for economic success.

Vehicles for Change is a nonprofit organization that began in 1999 and is based on the east coast. It has provided cars to 5,000 low-income families. As a result, 75% of those families were able to increase their income by an average of $7,000 (which amounts to a nearly 40% increase) within the first year of having the cars.

Southwest Solutions is one of the nonprofits partnering with Vehicles for Change in Detroit. The program will help individuals participating in our workforce development and veterans-assisting programs, according to Hector Hernandez, executive director of Southwest Economic Solutions. Hector is also on the advisory board of Vehicles for Change, which is certainly a welcome program for Detroit, given that 26% of the households in the city lack a car and 61% of employed Detroit residents work outside of the city. In the Motor City, where regional public transportation remains problematical, having access to a car is critical for families to overcome poverty and climb the economic ladder.

Almost all of the cars acquired by Vehicles for Change are donated. The cars are then repaired to be in good working condition, and each car is warrantied for six months. Families unable to pay the $750-$850 purchase price up front can secure low-interest, 12-month loans backed by Vehicles for Change.
