Southwest Detroit’s Harms Elementary receives “Spirit of Detroit Award” and skating party for great school attendance!
Detroit City Council Member Raquel Castaneda-Lopez surprised about 100 Harms Elementary students recently at the Rink at Campus Martius by presenting the school’s students with a Spirit of Detroit Award for their outstanding and noteworthy accomplishment for being one of the top schools for attendance in Detroit Public Schools Community District on Count Day.
The school. which offers a challenging curriculum and highly-qualified staff in a safe and caring environment, was awarded an exclusive skating party to the rink as part of the district’s emphasis on STEAM activities during the winter months, with S.T.E.A.M. standing for science, technology, engineering, arts and math. The Harms rink visit follows a weekend in which students from four DPSCD schools, including Southwest Detroit’s Munger Elementary-Middle School and Mark Twain School for Scholars, presented a first-ever “Robotics on Ice” showcase at the Rink at Campus Martius. The district also welcomed families to other free S.T.E.A.M. events at the Detroit Symphony Orchestra and other science and arts venues.
