On Saturday, November 14, two dozen volunteers from the neighborhood and community groups took action to help make a corner of southwest Detroit safer and more inviting. They boarded up vacant homes and cleaned up the yards, and painted over graffiti on buildings. The project was initiated and organized by the Southwest Detroit Business Association (SDBA) and funded by Community Legal Resources (CLR). Aliccia Berg Bollig-Fischer, of the West Grand block club, helped organize participation from Hubbard Richard, Mexicantown and other residents. Also participating were volunteers from the University of Michigan (recruited by Southwest Detroit Environmental Vision), SDBA staff and friends. Local artists created stenciling to provide an artistic finish to the boarding project reflecting the artistic nature of the neighborhood. Congratulations to all involved!
