The audience of children in kindergarten and first grade were attentive as Elvira Bautista spoke emotionally about the bullying that her young son had experienced in school and how the hurt continues to affect him.
Elvira’s speech was part of anti-bullying event presented by parents in Southwest Solutions’ English Language Learners Program/Toyota Family Literacy (ELLP/TFL) at Escuela Avancemos in southwest Detroit. Elvira participates in the program. The ELLP/TFL parents at Avancemos, with the guidance of the school social worker and other experts, have started an ongoing anti-bullying campaign to raise awareness and educate about appropriate behavior. The service project is designed to reach the more than 275 elementary students at the school.
The launch of the anti-bullying campaign was timed to start just before El Día Del Niño (Children’s Day), which is celebrated on April 30 in Mexico.
