About three dozen members of the Emerging Philanthropists group volunteered at our Larkins Early Learning Communities (ELC) site on Saturday. The group painted the infant/toddler room, finished the installation of the Born Learning Trail outside the building, repaired and painted benches around the Trail area, completed other outdoor maintenance projects, and sorted craft supplies used by ELC families.
The total value of the volunteer effort and donated supplies was more than $3,000, according to Erica Arias, Donor Engagement Associate at United Way for Southeastern Michigan (UWSEM). The event was co-organized by our ELC staff and UWSEM staff, including, Erica, Tracy Thomas, Director of Leadership Investors/Emerging Philanthropist Liaison, Angela Beckman, Director of Volunteer Engagement, and Alexandria Haynes, a Corporate Engagement Associate. UWSEM developed the Emerging Philanthropist (EP) program to provide opportunities for professionals and emerging community leaders to cultivate their philanthropic aspirations and connect with each other around meaningful projects that address community needs.
The EP volunteer project certainly made a difference at the Larkins ELC. Entering the infant/toddler room for the first time after the project, families and ELC staff were delighted to see the fresh coat of paint that brightened the room, which is often bustling with activities that combine learning and play.
ELCs provide free training and resources to parents and caregivers so that they can prepare children to be “ready to learn” when the children enter school.
The Emerging Philanthropists that participated in the volunteer event included:
“On behalf of our staff and the families we serve in our ELC program, I want to thank the United Way and all the volunteers who devoted their energy, talent and part of their Saturday to help make our ELC site a brighter and better place,’ said Lynn McGregor, Early Childhood and Family Literacy Manager at Southwest Solutions.
