Recovering from childhood trauma is a long and hard climb. The path forward is never a straight line. There will be stumbles and detours. Progress…
Each year we host a fundraiser called Solutions at Sunrise. This one-hour breakfast event is is one of the largest fundraiser breakfasts in southeastern Michigan. More than 700 people attended the 11th annual Solutions at Sunrise on September 29, 2016 at MGM Grand Detroit. The event raised over $180,000 to support Southwest Solutions programs.
Southwest Solutions’ President and CEO John Van Camp delivered the keynote address and noted the alarming statistic that over 60% of Detroit children live in poverty.
“To effectively address childhood poverty, which also means family poverty, it takes an all-hands-on-deck, comprehensive approach,” Van Camp said. “It takes an alignment of everyone: government, business, social impact organizations, philanthropy, residents and everyone in this room.”
Van Camp detailed how Southwest Solutions serves the needs of metro Detroiters in the areas of community and mental health, housing, education, workforce development, entrepreneurial training, community development and more.
Solutions at Sunrise was hosted by Fox2 news anchor Huel Perkins, and featured a short film called Make This Place Your Home, by award-winning documentary filmmaker Steve Palackdharry. Make This Place Your Home profiles a family helped by the organization’s Children, Youth and Families counseling program and a veteran helped by Southwest Solutions’ Homeless Veterans’ Reintegration Program (HVRP) and Supportive Services for Veteran Families (SSVF).
