Southwest Detroit to Celebrate a Variety of Music and Cultures at Free Summer Concert Series
DETROIT – For the third year in a row, Southwest Detroit will celebrate the diverse music and culture in the community during a free Celebrating Southwest summer concert series. The event is sponsored by Southwest Solutions, Ford Motor Company Fund, and the Ford Resource and Engagement Center.
The series kicks off with a celebration of African-American music on Saturday, June 11 from 2:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. at the Ford Resource and Engagement Center (also known as The Mexicantown Mercado), 2826 Bagley Avenue, Detroit 48216.
“Celebrating Southwest is a fantastic display of the multicultural diversity in our community,” said Osvaldo “Ozzie” Rivera, director of community engagement at Southwest Solutions. “Each month, we will focus on a different genre of music and culture. In addition, our family-friendly event will offer arts and crafts activities, food, and resource information on the many social and cultural services available in the area.”
The summer concert dates and themes are:
- Saturday, June 11 African American
- Saturday, July 23 Youth
- Saturday, August 27 Arab American
- Saturday, September 17 Latino/Hispanic
Featured performers for the June 11th kickoff event are the Mosaic Youth Theatre of Detroit, Vincent York’s Jazzistry, blues artist Robert Jones, percussionist John Davis, and the legendary T.
