Several blocks in southwest Detroit are much tidier today, thanks to the efforts of 15 families in our Say & Play (Hablen y Jueguen con Palabras) program.
Family Service Learning is an essential part of the program, which is designed to increase the language skills and vocabulary of young children in low-income families. The families, who planned the volunteer project themselves, picked up trash, discarded tires and bulky items around Springwells, Cecil, and Dingerman Park.
“If we want a better neighborhood, we have to work together and make it happen,” said Eduardo Estrella, whose family participated in the cleanup. Say & Play is funded by PNC Bank, The Skillman Foundation and the Max M. & Marjorie S. Fisher Foundation.
