Congratulations to the first group of students to complete YouthBuild job-training program! YouthBuild teaches young people construction skills so they can prepare for careers in the building trades. Seven students graduated from the 26-week program. They participated in a special ceremony attended by family, friends, and program staff and partners.
In addition to learning real-world building and carpentry skills, YouthBuild students earn certifications in OSHA training, first aid, customer service and Work Keys. They can also earn their GED in the program, all while receiving a stipend.
YouthBuild graduate Toiana Lackland not only got her GED in the program, she also got a job with Future Build Construction where she is continuing to learn about carpentry, framing, insulation installation, and more.
“I came into the program with no high school diploma, no goals and no life plan,” Toi said. “Now I know what I want and know how to get there. I want to advance my education, become an expert carpenter, and own my business one day to rehab houses in the city.”
YouthBuild is available to young people 18-24 years old who live in Detroit, Highland Park or Hamtramck. There are still slots available for the next class. To sign up or learn more, contact Manny at 313-297-0091 or email him at firstname.lastname@example.org.
Our YouthBuild program is a partnership of SEMCA, Michigan Works!, and Detroit At Work.
