Families and individuals living in our affordable housing are receiving new winter coats thanks to the generosity of the The Rotary Club of Grosse Pointe, Grosse Pointe Sunrise Rotary, and the The Rotary Club of Detroit. The three local Rotary Clubs donated nearly 300 coats that are being distributed at our Housing offices. This is the second consecutive year that the Rotary Clubs have donated coats to help our tenants in need.
Raleigh Kirksey lives in one of our affordable housing apartment buildings in the Springwells area in southwest Detroit. Raleigh is in one of our special needs units because of disabilities resulting from his being shot in 2011.
“I was drunk at the time and got into an argument, and the guy shot me three times, once in the head,” Raleigh said. “I’m lucky to be alive and I’ve been clean and sober since then.
“I needed a new coat because the zipper is broken on my old one. I take the bus to get around, and I’ll be warmer now.”
