At the 2017 Detroit Community Development Awards last night, John Van Camp was honored with the C. David Campbell Award for Extraordinary Achievements and Leadership. John is President and CEO of Southwest Solutions. He is the first recipient of the prestigious award.
David Campbell (1953-2014) was the former President of the McGregor Fund and a founding board member of many leading philanthropic and nonprofit organizations in Detroit. The award in his name recognizes the integrity, vision and passionate advocacy for equality that David embodied.
In presenting the award to John, the awards’ committee noted that John joined Southwest Solutions in 1973 and became its head eight years later. ‘His broad vision delineated the future of the organization,” the committee wrote. It continued:
“John believed that reintegrating the mentally ill and homeless into the community also required providing decent, affordable housing and support services, and actively participating in neighborhood revitalization and economic development.
Today, Southwest Solutions is a family of nonprofit and for-profit corporations that offers more than 50 program from mental health wellness to housing development and supportive housing assistance. In all, its programs impact more than 20,000 people a year.
After 45 years at Southwest Solutions, John has decided to retire, leaving behind a legacy of impressive leadership … He is more than the visionary leader of Southwest Solutions; he is force of energy that, no matter what his next step in life is, he will continue to make a difference in the community he loves.”
The Detroit Community Development Awards is organized by LISC Detroit, Community Development Advocates of Detroit, and Michigan Community Resources.
