Early Childhood & Family Literacy
Early Head Start
Our Early Head Start provides free, comprehensive child development services to low-income families through both home-based and center-based programming. Early Head Start (EHS) serves pregnant women and children birth to three years old. The goal is to improve the health and readiness-to-learn of children before they enter preschool and kindergarten. Our EHS is the first program of its kind in southwest Detroit. It is part of a major collaborative initiative led by Starfish Family Services.

Services

Pregnant women and children 0-3 years old who live in the 48210 zip code may be eligible for our Early Head Start (EHS) program. In addition to residing in 48210, participants must meet income requirements set by the federal government, which funds the program.

The program is free. Services are provided both at home and at our EHS center. The services are offered in English and Spanish. Our EHS program will serve 118 families: 94 through home-based programming and 24 through center-based programming.

  • Home-based services are provided by Early Childhood Educators through regularly scheduled visits to the home.
  • Center-based services are provided to parents who work 20 or more hours per week or who are in school part-time (6 credit hours).

EHS provides a broad spectrum of services, including early childhood education, enriched childcare, medical and dental care referrals, nutrition and healthy living classes, mental health and parent support services, and more.

The mission of EHS is to foster healthy prenatal results, advance the development of very young children, and promote healthy family functioning. Studies show that EHS programs significantly increase the cognitive, language and social-emotional skills of children.

Our licensed EHS center is located at 3811 Cicotte Street, Detroit, MI 48210 in the former Logan Elementary school building.
