Valentine’s Day was also Count Day in the Detroit Public Schools Community District (DPSCD), and there were special efforts across the District to promote attendance. At Mason Academy on the northeast side, students’ fathers were invited to a “Donuts with Dads” event in the school library.

The event was organized by Sonya Vinson, our Community School Site Coordinator at Mason, and it drew 42 dads who enjoyed donuts with their children and listened to remarks from three speakers: Terrence Haugabook, Assistant United States Attorney; Terry Catchings, District Chief to City Councilman Scott Benson; and Philip Van Hooks, Principal at Mason.

All three speakers stressed the importance of fathers being involved in their kids’ education and lives.

“If you’re there for your children, the possibilities for them are endless, and they are more likely to achieve their dreams,” said Terrence Haugabook.
