On Sunday, the National Council of Jewish Women, Greater Detroit Section (NCJW/Greater Detroit) held is fourth annual Back 2 School Store event at Munger PreK-to-8 School in southwest Detroit. About 500 elementary school children from low-income households each selected clothing, a winter coat, hat and gloves, sneakers, a new book, and a backpack filled with school supplies and personal care products. All items were new, and the total value that each child received was about $180.

Each child was accompanied by a volunteer “personal shopper” to help the child choose the items in the “pop-up department store” in the Munger gym. Families were pre-qualified by nine different community organizations to attend the event. Southwest Solutions was one of the nine organizations, and our Community Schools team pre-qualified 150 children who go school in southwest Detroit at Munger, Harms, Earhart or Bennett.

In addition to the Back 2 School Store, the event included a health fair and a resource fair. More than 250 volunteers participated in the event.

The event was also featured on FOX 2 Detroit.
