Beautifully Restored Lawndale

Apartment Building Opens

DETROIT, April 15, 2009 —— Southwest Housing Solutions is accepting rental applications for its new Lawndale apartment building in southwest Detroit.

The 14-unit building is located at 2201 Lawndale St. It offers affordable housing and state-of-the-art “green” construction in a beautifully restored historic building.

The building is just south of Vernor Avenue. Lawndale features studio and one, two or three bedroom units that rent for $245 to $700 per month. Each apartment is completely renovated and features new appliances, energy-efficient windows and insulation, central air and heat, optional gated parking, and many other amenities.

Southwest Housing Solutions (SWHS), the developer, bought the dilapidated structure for $180,000 in December 2007 and invested $2.4 million to rehabilitate the building. The funding sources for the project are State of Michigan low-income tax credits, Federal Home Loan Bank of Indianapolis, and Fifth Third Bank.

“We are committed to providing affordable housing that is high quality and which enhances the quality of life of our tenants and the neighborhood,” said Tim Thorland, executive director of SWHS. “In restoring the Lawndale Apartments, we combined a deep respect for historical preservation with advanced construction practices and materials.”

SWHS will also manage the property and, in keeping with its community-based philosophy, will implement management practices that encourage cooperation. Tenants will have access to support services designed to help them improve their lives. They will also have the opportunity to participate in an advisory council that enables tenants to have a direct voice in making the building a better place.

Those interested in renting a unit at the Lawndale Apartments can obtain an application online at www.swsol.org or in person at SWHS at 1920 25th St., Detroit, 48216. The phone number is 313.297.1311.
