Landlords Impressed by Southwest Solutions

Supportive Housing Programs

Twenty Detroit-area landlords attended an informative meeting at our Housing Resource Center to learn more about the programs we provide to facilitate housing and support services for families, adults and veterans that are homeless or at risk of becoming homeless.

“Southwest Solutions does the best job of anyone in the state in helping poor people get housing and stay housed,” said Jerry Harmon, owner of Westport Properties, who spoke at the lunch event on November 14, 2011.

Jerry has been working with the Housing Resource Center (HRC) at Southwest Solutions for six years to get tenants for his properties in Detroit, comprised of 104 houses and three apartment buildings. All his tenants are low-income.

“I firmly believe that everybody deserves a second chance, despite the mistakes they have made,” Jerry said. “Working with Southwest is great because the staff really cares about its clients and makes an extra effort to help them take advantage of the second chance.”

A component of this extra effort is the nationally-acclaimed Blended Management approach that Southwest Solutions implements. This approach encourages landlords and tenants to set mutual goals, understand and respect each other’s responsibilities, and keep the lines of communication open to help prevent evictions.

At the event, Southwest staff presented information about several programs:

“The purpose of these presentations is to allow landlords and property managers to learn about the housing resources Southwest Solutions offers, and also to explain how they can become part of the mission of building a healthier community,” said Jamie Ebaugh, director of the HRC.

Landlords in attendance said that they found the meeting very helpful and look forward to working with Southwest programs that they did not know about before.

“I like working with Southwest because they don’t just shovel housing vouchers at me,” said Greg Bowlby, owner of Parkview Management, which has about 40 units of low-income housing. “Southwest backs up the vouchers with real support.”
