Parents in our Say & Play with Words program hosted a Healthy Pet Event for the southwest Detroit community this weekend. In partnership with the Michigan Humane Society, PAWS in the D and Detroit Animal Lovers Society, pet owners were provided information about animal health and care, animal food and supplies and 20 pets received free microchip trackers from Pretties for Pitties. Community members were also invited to create a cat or dog house for a public voting contest, the contest winner received a $50 gift card. Attendees also enjoyed free food, crafts and face painting. Say & Play is funded by PNC Bank, The Skillman Foundation, and the Max M. & Marjorie S. Fisher Foundation. It is an innovative education model designed to increase the vocabulary of young children by promoting family engagement. This event originated and was entirely planned by the families in the program. The parents also promoted the event on social media and by passing out flyers to neighbors and local businesses. Not only does Say & Play help improve the education and confidence of children, it also boosts the confidence and abilities of parents.
