Our English Language Learners Program (ELLP) held its graduation event on Sunday, June 11. The family literacy program served Spanish-speaking mothers with children in pre-kindergarten through third grade in two schools in southwest Detroit: Harms Elementary and Escuela Avancemos. At Harms, 21 parents graduated; at Avancemos, 18 graduated. ELLP not only teaches parents English, it allows parents to spend time in their children’s classroom to help them with schoolwork. Parents both learn with their children and learn to support their children’s learning.
ELLP has served more than 1,000 families in southwest Detroit in the last decade. A recent study shows that our ELLP is one of the best programs of its kind in the country based on many important measures. Students significantly increased their reading proficiency, academic confidence, social skills, attendance and other outcomes. Parents significantly increased their English skills, their engagement in their children’s homework and reading, and their participation at their children’s school.
Congratulations to all the families that participated in ELLP. Your commitment to education and the American promise is truly inspirational, and it has been our privilege to help you achieve your goals.
Each 2017 ELLP graduate received certificates of accomplishment, an iPad, and a gift bag.
